Transfer speculation around established players often intensifies when their starting opportunities become more limited. Reports linking a midfielder with a return to a major European club can circulate quickly once minutes are reduced. Family members are sometimes drawn into those conversations when they appear on Spanish media outlets.
The decision to move from a domestic league to the Premier League is rarely taken lightly. Players who leave Spain in search of trophies and regular European football usually measure success by what they achieve after the transfer. When those targets are met, external links can feel less relevant to those closest to the player.
Competition for places at a club that has just won the league creates a different environment for squad members. Secondary roles do not always signal unhappiness, particularly when the team continues to compete for multiple honours. Public comments from a parent can clarify the situation more directly than anonymous reports.
The father of Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has denied rumours linking his son with a move to Real Madrid, according to Metro. Speaking on the Spanish programme Goles con Parado, he insisted that Merino remains happy at the club.
Merino joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad in a £31.6 million deal in 2024 after winning the European Championship with Spain. He has since made 86 appearances in all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing eight assists under Mikel Arteta. The 30-year-old has not started a Premier League match this season amid increased competition for places.
When asked why Real Madrid did not pursue his son more strongly before the Arsenal move, Merino’s father replied: “Well, look, it’s not just about Real Madrid.”
He added: “He plays for Arsenal and he has won the Premier League, reached the Champions League final, and reached the Champions League semi-finals last year.”
He continued: “He is part of a world-class team, so he is a world-class player.”
On the possibility of a future return to La Liga, the response was equally firm. “Well, he is now at a club that competes for everything. That is what he wanted when he left Real Sociedad.”
The comments arrive after Spanish reports suggested Real Madrid could revive interest in the former Sociedad man. Merino has proved useful in multiple roles since arriving in north London, including as a makeshift striker. His reduced starting opportunities this term have not, according to his father, changed his satisfaction with the current situation.
Arsenal won the Premier League last season and reached the Champions League final. Those achievements form the core of the argument put forward by Merino’s father. The midfielder remains under contract at the Emirates and continues to contribute when selected.
The father’s appearance on Spanish television has provided a clear public response to the latest speculation. No indication has been given that Merino is seeking a move away from Arsenal at this stage. The focus remains on the squad’s ongoing challenge for trophies this season.
