Packers’ next opponent hires Mike Pettine, former Green Bay coordinator

The struggling Dallas Cowboys have hired former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to help right the ship. The Cowboys’ defense is allowing 27.2 points per game this season and has allowed a passer rating of 120.5 against, the worst mark in the NFL through five weeks of NFL action.

First-time defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who got his start in the NFL as a defensive quality control coach with the Packers in 2019, was originally hired by Pettine, who was retained in Green Bay’s head coach transition from Mike McCarthy to Matt LaFleur.

Since leaving Green Bay in 2021, when Parker was hired by the Denver Broncos, he has spent most of his time in the Vic Fangio tree, spending the 2021-2023 seasons with Denver and the 2024-2025 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Notably, Pettine’s defense, which is more man-coverage-heavy than the Fangio tree, is a bit different from Parker’s background.

The Cowboys have some extra time to practice this week, as the team is coming off a _Thursday Night Football_ loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We’ll see if that extra rest and the addition of Pettine can help Dallas when they make the trip to Green Bay for their upcoming _Sunday Night Football_ matchup.
