Liverpool suffered a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield, but Victor Munoz offered a rare bright spot with an energetic display that gave supporters reason for optimism.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring before Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki added further goals to seal an emphatic victory for City, who restored their three-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
Liverpool’s task became even harder after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off for a second bookable offence. Despite the disappointing result, Munoz impressed with his direct running, willingness to take on defenders and relentless pressing.
His approach fits the aggressive, high-energy style Andoni Iraola wants to establish at Liverpool. Alongside Lewis Koumas, Munoz helped disrupt City’s rhythm during the opening stages, offering pace and attacking intent. However, Gravenberch’s dismissal shifted the momentum, leaving Liverpool with an uphill battle.
Munoz has taken to social media with a short message to Liverpool supporters worldwide. He posted on Instagram: “Giving up is not an option.”
Munoz’s tireless display was even more striking when compared with some of Liverpool’s expensive signings. While Florian Wirtz struggled to make an impact in the No.10 role and Bradley Barcola continued adapting to English football, the Spanish winger provided the directness, energy and attacking aggression Liverpool have often lacked.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher offered a candid assessment of the Reds’ attacking performances:
“We need Barcola and we need Wirtz to step up and help at the top of the pitch,” Carragher said during the post-match analysis. “Koumas and the young Spanish winger were better than the two £100m players.”
Liverpool must learn from the defeat, but Munoz’s emergence as a young World Cup winner with the pace, courage and work rate to trouble elite opponents is a major positive. He was Liverpool’s standout performer, and displays like this suggest he could become a key figure in Iraola’s project.
