Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Interested in Barcelona Defender Jules Kounde in£42m Deal

Chelsea Consider Right-Side Defensive Reinforcement

Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a move for Barcelona’s Jules Kounde, according to Spanish outlet Sport. Xabi Alonso has favoured a back three this season, but the Blues’ options on the right side look stretched.

Wesley Fofana, Josh Acheampong, Malo Gusto and Reece James are all available for the right centre-back and wing-back roles. Fofana’s persistent injury problems remain a concern, while Gusto and James have also been used in midfield.

Kounde Struggling for Minutes at Barcelona

Chelsea are said to have long admired the France international and tried to sign him in 2022, only for Barcelona to win the race. With Kounde now in a rotational role under Hansi Flick, the Blues reportedly see a fresh opportunity.

His contract runs until 2030, giving the Catalans a strong negotiating hand. Sport claim they would want around £42m, and Chelsea would not have a clear run, with Bayern Munich also keen. Kounde is reportedly content at Camp Nou.

What Kounde Would Offer Chelsea

Originally a centre-back at Sevilla, Kounde has mostly played at right-back for Barcelona and France. He is quick, strong in the air, comfortable in possession and reads the game intelligently.

In his prime years, he would offer Alonso valuable versatility across the back line.

Our Take on Chelsea’s Interest

In my view, Kounde would be a smart addition. His ability to cover both centre-back and full-back would ease the pressure on Fofana and James. The real question is whether Chelsea will make a firm approach in January or wait until the summer, and whether Barcelona will be willing to sell a player who remains a useful squad option.
