Head coaches who get fired often rebuild their reputations as coordinators or assistants, and many of them end up shaping the next generation of coaches along the way. Former Browns head coaches have taken plenty of those winding paths. One of them has now landed a new job in the middle of the 2026 season.
Ari Meirov reported the Cowboys are hiring former Browns head coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant.
“The #Cowboys have hired veteran NFL coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant. Pettine gave DC Christian Parker his first job in the NFL in 2019,” Meirov wrote.

Mike Pettine has one of the longest coaching histories in the league. He began as a high school coach in Pennsylvania before breaking into the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens in 2002, where he built his reputation as a defensive mind. He later served as defensive coordinator for the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills.
That success earned him the Browns’ head coaching job in 2014. His first season started with real promise, as Cleveland climbed to 7-4 and spent part of November atop the AFC North before losing its final 5 games to finish 7-9.
The following year went much worse. The Browns finished 3-13 in 2015, and Pettine was let go after 2 seasons with a 10-22 record.
He rebounded once he got back into the league. Pettine served as defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2020, spent a season with the Chicago Bears and then worked 4 years as an assistant head coach with the Minnesota Vikings.
His connection to Christian Parker explains the move. Pettine gave the Cowboys’ current defensive coordinator his first NFL opportunity in Green Bay in 2019, and Parker is now bringing his former boss aboard to add experience to his staff during the season.
For Browns fans, Pettine’s tenure doubles as a cautionary tale. The 2014 team looked like a legitimate contender heading into the stretch run, only to collapse once the losses started piling up.
The 2026 Browns are in a similar spot. They sit at 3-2 after their first loss in a month, and Todd Monken is dealing with injuries to key players like Mason Graham, KC Concepcion and Quinshon Judkins as the Baltimore Ravens prepare to visit on Sunday.
Pettine’s career shows that one rough stint as a head coach does not have to define a coach’s legacy. His time in Cleveland is also a reminder of how quickly a promising start can slip away, and Monken will be working to make sure his first season in charge ends very differently.
