Eagles’ Alarming 45% Three-and-Out Rate Puts Their Offensive Struggles Under the Spotlight 1

The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a devastating loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday for various reasons. Nick Sirianni’s late-game decision-making was culpable, key starters were injured, and to top it all, the offense put up an underwhelming second-half performance.

Jalen Hurts described it postgame as “inexcusable.” The night saw the Eagles manage only three points in the second half against the Jags. That performance bears all the marks of a historic malaise, something that Sirianni and other coaches would want fixed as soon as possible.

The Eagles registered seven second-half drives against. The Jaguars punted five times and mustered 86 yards on 34 plays, averaging 2.53 yards per play. Sadly, those numbers exceed comparable stats in their last two games.

Against the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Rams in Weeks 3 and 4, the Eagles scored zero points on 11 second-half drives. They also scraped 119 yards on 48 plays (2.48 yards per play). Things weren’t better against the lowly Commanders and Titans in Weeks 1 and 2, when they registered 20 points on 10 second-half drives.

“The Eagles offense has only scored 3 points in the second half over the last 3 games. They have the worst second half offense in the NFL this season. They have gone 3 and out 45% of the time, worst in the NFL….”

In five games total, the Eagles averaged -0.407 EPA per designed run and -0.285 EPA per dropback in the second half. Should the Eagles keep their underwhelming run, it’ll be the worst second-half offense combination of any NFL side since 2002.

Hurts himself decried the performance as being below standard. While he acknowledged the team’s ability to create better opportunities in the first half, he wished the team had improved its second-half play to prevent further damage going forward.

Experts think the problem stems from issues surrounding play-calling, health, and execution. First-year OC Sean Mannion would do well to improve at making adjustments to the side out of halftime.

On the execution front, Hurts hasn’t been good enough either. The offensive line hasn’t been good enough with disjointed passing and a nonexistent run game. Then, they’re without Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith, who could help to bolster their quality over the last two games.

Fortunately, the Eagles have a glimmer of hope, considering that Barkley, Smith, Drew Kendall, and Landon Dickerson should return soon. Beyond that, Sirianni, Mannion, Hurts, and the second-half offense would do well to up their game if the team’s 2026 playoff chances were to survive.
