Newcastle United may get the chance to sign transfer target Petar Sucic during the January transfer window, according to reports.

Sportske Novosti claim that both the Magpies and Everton had approaches knocked back by his club, Inter Milan, over the summer.

However, Sucic could be on the market in the New Year if he doesn’t get more game time before then.

So far, the Croatian international has started 3 of Inter’s 7 matches across all competitions, and his last game may suggest that he may still have a future at the Nerazzurri. He played the full 90 minutes and scored during a 3-0 win over Parma on Saturday.

Sucic has a lot of competition

The main issue for the midfielder is the sheer amount of options that manager Christian Chivu has at his disposal. Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu are guaranteed starters, while Curtis Jones has recently joined from Liverpool.

Piotr Zielinski and Aleksandar Stankovic are also part of the first team squad, so Sucic can’t afford to lose form, or he will find himself out in the cold.

Sportske Novosti report that the 22-year-old will remain “patient”, but he has a “similar character” to his fellow countryman Luka Modric. He is keen to “play, play, play,” and for that reason, a transfer away from Italy cannot be completely ruled out.

Do Newcastle United need another midfielder?

Having brought in both Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba in the summer, it would be a surprise if the middle of the park is further strengthened.

One thing to keep a close eye on is Joe Willock’s contract situation. As things stand, his current deal expires at the end of the season, and head coach Matthias Jaissle has publicly expressed his desire to keep him.

However, if Willock does move on, there could be scope for signing a player like Sucic, as long as he is open to a transfer.
