Carmelo Anthony believes Karl-Anthony Towns and the others are too focused on their next contract instead of enjoying the success they achieved with the New York Knicks.

The NBA and Knicks legend is convinced the organization made the right decision to pause contract extension talks with all their eligible players, including Towns.

“I think it’s happier times, I just think things just move so fast now that you get a chance to celebrate the championship, then it’s business as usual, right? Business has got to go on,” Anthony told Brian Mahoney of the Associated Press.

“I think it was big for them to stop the conversations, and just, we’ll get to that. We’ll get to that at the end of the season.”

Karl-Anthony Towns, Knicks stuck in extension situation amid negotiation pause

The New York Knicks have officially put contract extension talks with Karl-Anthony Towns on hold, as the franchise issued a rare public statement confirming that negotiations would be postponed until later in the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Beyond Towns, Josh Hart, Miles McBride, and Tyler Kolek are also extension-eligible in New York.

Towns is particularly infuriated about where his extension situation with the Knicks currently stands. The star big man, who is open to taking a pay cut, is eligible for a four-year contract extension worth over $276 million with New York. He will earn $57 million this upcoming season, with a $61.1 million 2027-28 player option.

However, before shutting down any extension talks, the Knicks reportedly just handed a $200 million offer to Towns, which the center completely declined.

Carmelo Anthony wants Knicks to focus on basketball, title defense

In the end, Carmelo Anthony wants the New York Knicks to focus on basketball and let the business settle itself once the season ends.

The Knicks are facing serious competition to repeat as the defending NBA champions, as they will open their season with a highly anticipated matchup against LeBron James and the star-studded Philadelphia 76ers on their ring night.

“But whatever’s going to happen is going to happen,” Anthony said. “But right now, let the be all be the be all, which is basketball. Let’s go defend this championship. And I think both parties understand.”
