Curt Cignetti Stole From Jalon Daniels

Made impression on championship coach.

Pretty interesting that maybe the best coach in college football had Bucs quarterback Jalon Daniels on his brain over the weekend. In a one-score game. Trailing late in the fourth quarter.

Indiana had the ball on the Nebraska-46 trailing 17-13 late. Fourth-and-one. The defending national champs appeared to be on the ropes.

But from a pistol formation, Indiana faked a handoff and the Nebraska defense bit on the run. Indiana then hit probable first-round pick receiver Nick Marsh as it looked like Marsh ran a slant to the inside. Marsh hauled the ball in and was off to the races with the game-winning touchdown.

Big deal, right? Well, Indiana coach Curt Cignetti, in his postgame remarks, gave Daniels credit for the play.

Cignetti said Kansas and Daniels once used that same play in a similar position. Cignetti liked the play so much he put it in his playbook.

“Kansas made that one famous with the guy who’s starting quarterback for Tampa (Jalon Daniels),” Cignetti said. “Stole that [play] about 5-6 years ago.”

The play didn’t look to be anything special to Joe. But Joe did find it very cool that Cignetti remembered the quarterback and knew what Daniels is doing these days.
