Liverpool will have to bounce back quickly from its first loss of the season - even if there is some debate over what a defeat to Manchester City actually means now.

‌

There was plenty for Andoni Iraola to like despite the 3-0 reverse at Anfield on Sunday. At the same time, there were some familiar concerns for the Reds’ head coach, and ones that he will need to address soon.

But while the form of Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola continues to be a worry, there might be some better news on the way regarding one of Iraola’s other attacking options, while another big-money deal could be on the cards.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

Rio Ngumoha (Liverpool)

Liverpool is closing in on an agreement with Rio Ngumoha over a new contract at Anfield, according to TeamTalk.

The Reds are claimed to be finalizing the remaining details before confirming the new deal, with the club said to see no major issues arising despite interest from Arsenal and Bayern Munich in the teenager.

Ngumoha is currently under contract until 2028, but having now turned 18, Liverpool can tie him down to a longer-term deal. A new contract is said to be among Julian Ward’s first priorities as sporting director, with the club determined to protect the future of one of its most highly-rated stars.

Liverpool.com says: A new deal for Ngumoha absolutely has to be a priority for Liverpool. If nothing else, just to protect itself should one of its rivals manage to turn the youngster's head.

Ngumoha has already built quite the reputation, but there is still a long way for him to go, and hopefully Andoni Iraola can be the perfect man to guide him and help him reach the heights so many now expect.

William Gomes (Porto)

Liverpool remains interested in William Gomes, despite the Porto winger’s release clause rising after signing a new deal with the Portuguese club, according to A Bola.

The Reds were linked with Gomes during the summer as a potential option on the right wing, although the club would end up not signing anyone else after landing Bradley Barcola. The Brazilian though is said to be “very highly rated” by Liverpool, and still on the club’s list of targets.

Gomes though signed a new contract earlier this month to keep him at Porto until 2031. As part of the new deal, it’s claimed that his release clause has risen from $89 million (€80M) to $112 million (€100M).

Liverpool.com says: We're not so sure Liverpool would be willing to pay that much for a player like Gomes, especially if he isn't playing in one of Europe's top five leagues.

The links do make sense, especially with Ward - who has connections to Portugal and has got plenty of business from there in the past - now back as sporting director. If Liverpool is interested in Gomes though, you'd expect it would try and bring that price down.
