Merseyside Police Make 10 Arrests And Confirm Officer Injury in Manchester City Win Over Liverpool at Anfield

Merseyside Police have confirmed 10 arrests and a serious facial injury to one of their officers after Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

City saw off Liverpool with a quick flurry of three goals after Ryan Gravenberch was shown a second yellow card in the 62nd minute.

Goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki settled the contest as Manchester City extended their perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season to six games - and eight games across all competitions.

The fixture was played against an unusual backdrop, with an independent commission having found Manchester City guilty on 114 of 115 charges of breaching the Premier League's financial rules between 2009/10 and 2017/18.

The club have denied wrongdoing and lodged a formal appeal on 1 October, and the verdict remained the main subject of conversation around the game.

Liverpool supporters chanted "cheats" as the teams emerged from the tunnel, while vendors outside the ground sold scarves referencing the verdict and banners were displayed mocking the visitors. Around 3,000 Manchester City supporters were in the away end, where they performed the Poznan in the second-half.

City's squad entered Anfield by a back route to avoid a hostile reception from home supporters, and a decoy bus was used to draw away people throwing stones.

Elliot Anderson, who received the Player of the Match award for an outstanding display in midfield, said in a post-match interview that the atmosphere on arrival and in the early minutes was more hostile than usual, and described the squad as closer than ever through the uncertainty.

Ten arrests made and police officer taken to hospital

As reported by The Athletic, Merseyside Police said they made 10 arrests following the Premier League meeting between Liverpool and Manchester City.

One man was arrested on suspicion of two offences of assaulting a constable, five on suspicion of tragedy chanting, one on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and assault, two for affray, and one on suspicion of throwing items onto the pitch.

The incident in which the officer was hurt took place on Anfield Road at around 6.35pm, as rival supporters were leaving the stadium after the game. The officer was taken to hospital for treatment and is now recovering at home.

Five males were arrested by Merseyside Police before and during the match for tragedy chanting, with the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 having resulted in the deaths of 97 Liverpool fans.

Chief inspector Leanne Hobin said: "Officers were on duty outside the ground to smoothly facilitate the movements of those travelling to and from the game, as well as minimise any disruption on the roads outside.

"The officers and stewards are there to protect the public and keep them safe, and it is extremely disappointing that an officer has sustained a serious injury while carrying out that duty. Enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing so that anyone responsible for criminality can be brought to justice.

"The tragic loss of life should never be a subject for tribal point scoring. Football fans who chant about tragedies cause huge distress to the loved ones of people who died and their behaviour has absolutely no place in football. We will continue to work with clubs to take action to identify any perpetrators and bring them to justice.

"I hope the arrests today send a clear message and act as a deterrent to others. Anyone who engages in this abhorrent behaviour risks ending up in custody and getting a criminal record.

"Despite the actions of a few, the overwhelming majority of the 60,000 fans in attendance behaved well and I want to thank them for their co-operation."

What else surrounded the Anfield clash?

Enzo Maresca said after the game that his players had handled a difficult few weeks well, and that the club needed to learn how to deal with outside noise because it would follow them to away grounds.

The Italian pointed to the fans singing at the final whistle as the response the club wanted to make, and noted that Ferran Soriano and Hugo Viana travelled to Merseyside alongside the squad.

Haaland said the travelling supporters appeared to have the time of their lives, comparing the occasion to City's 3-0 win at Anfield in November 2025 in his post-match comments. It was the first league meeting between the sides without Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp in the dugouts since 2015, with Andoni Iraola in charge of Liverpool.

Manchester City remain three points clear at the top of the Premier League and are unbeaten in the league this season. The appeal against the commission's opinion remains pending, with the sanctions phase not yet begun and full resolution not expected until 2028 or 2029.

Maresca's side return to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night to host reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on matchday two of the league phase, with former City boss Pep Guardiola also set to attend.
