Stat Attack – Chelsea v Bournemouth
Stat Attack – Chelsea v Bournemouth
Here is the xG from the Chelsea game. Whilst it is an oddity, Chelsea could largely hold us at bay after going 2-0 up very early. Tavernier lost the ball sloppily in attack and Chelsea broke, Palmer running a long way before setting up Henderson, who scored a long-range effort going in off the post (rated 1 in 20). Then Chelsea had doubled their advantage; a shot from Neto (1 in 8) was saved by Petrovic, although it was recycled to Rodgers (who must have been only just onside), whose shot flicked off Silva’s head and over Petrovic into the side netting (1 in 20). The game quietened down with only a Rogers shot blocked by Smith (1 in 8) and Rayan racing through one-on-one, forcing a good save from Martinez (1 in 5) occurring before the interval. At the break, the xG was Chelsea 0.43, AFCB 0.35.
The second half incredibly started like the first, with a mistimed tackle from Silva allowing Neto to pull the ball back for Pedro to thump home (1 in 8). Things were looking bleak, but AFCB pulled a goal back, following a flicked-on corner, that led to a scramble with Silva involved (2 in 5) and Caicedo clearing the ball into Evanilson and the rebound going into the net. (nearly 3 in 5). At this point, AFCB had more of the ball but were struggling to create chances and got caught on the counter. It was a good team goal, with Chavarria breaking down the left and crossing for Pedro to place it in (1 in 2). The game had gone well but was made worse 3 minutes later when Christie eventually hauled back Palmer on the second attempt, giving a free kick in a shooting position. Henderson surprisingly took it and scored (1 in 16). There were no real chances in the game, and the final xG was Chelsea 1.10, AFCB 1.38 with Understat also showing a higher value for Bournemouth at 1.37 vs 1.68. We caught Chelsea on a bad day; on other occasions they do not score 5 goals from the chances they had, but that is the joy and pain of football.

There was one enforced change from the Liverpool game, with Brooks (7) replacing Scott, who was injured on football duty, although there was a surprise in that Rayan (37) was playing more centrally and almost paired with Evanilson (9), with the Brazilian playing a little deeper. This line-up didn’t particularly work, and Brooks came off at half-time, being replaced by Gannon-Doak (11) who played on the left, with Tavernier (16) moving to CAM and Rayan (37) moving to the right. (9). In the 72nd minute, at 5-1, AFCB made a triple change with Cook (4) replacing Christie (10), Sanchez (24) replacing Smith (15) and Rodriguez (30) replacing Tavernier (16). Presumably this was to save disciplinary problems as Tavernier and Christie were on bookings and also to rest legs with the game lost. Sanchez and Cook were direct swaps, with Rodriguez appearing to play up with Evanilson. With 6 minutes to go, Truffert (3), who was on a booking, was replaced with Soler (6), although we were pinned back for much of this time.
