October 13 – Merseyside Police have confirmed ten arrests and a serious injury to one of their officers around Manchester City’s visit to Liverpool on Sunday.
One man was arrested on suspicion of two offences of assaulting a constable. Five were arrested on suspicion of tragedy chanting. One for being drunk and disorderly and for assault, two for affray, and one for throwing items on to the pitch.
At around 6.35pm, as supporters left the ground, an officer suffered a serious facial injury while making an arrest on Anfield Road. He was treated in hospital and is recovering at home.
Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin said: “The officers and stewards are there to protect the public and keep them safe, and it is extremely disappointing that an officer has sustained a serious injury while carrying out that duty. Enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing so that anyone responsible for criminality can be brought to justice.
“Football fans who chant about tragedies cause huge distress to the loved ones of people who died and their behaviour has absolutely no place in football.”
The Hillsborough disaster in 1989 resulted in the deaths of 97 Liverpool fans.
This was City’s first away game since their guilty verdict on financial breaches, which the club has appealed. Hundreds gathered outside Anfield. The team bus came in through a back entrance. Inside, City’s players met banners, chants about cheating and jeering from the first whistle. The club have appealed the verdict.
