Midfield performances in high-profile fixtures often reshape the debate about who is leading the division. A dominant display from a new signing can prompt comparisons with established stars at other clubs. Those discussions frequently place one player at the top of the list while acknowledging a strong challenger.
England’s options in central midfield have improved significantly over recent seasons. Players who combine defensive solidity with progressive ability tend to stand out when the national team is considered. Pundits who watch both club and international football are quick to highlight pairs that could serve the senior side for years.
Title races between two clubs add weight to individual assessments. When one side records a convincing win at a difficult venue, attention turns to the players who controlled the game. Former professionals then rank those performers against the best midfielders elsewhere in the league.
Jamie Carragher has praised Elliot Anderson after Manchester City’s 3-0 win at Liverpool but maintained that Declan Rice remains the best midfielder in the Premier League. City climbed three points above Arsenal with the result, which came in their first game since the guilty verdict on financial charges.
Anderson, signed from Nottingham Forest for £116 million in the summer, produced another strong performance at Anfield. Gary Neville described him as “absolutely outstanding” on his Sky Sports podcast and said he looks “worth every penny”. Neville noted that while Rice’s quality was expected when he joined Arsenal, Anderson has answered early doubts about his fee and level.
Carragher reserved particular praise for the City midfielder while ranking him behind Rice. “If you’re a Newcastle fan watching Elliot Anderson… they had to sell him but you think now could they have sold someone else and kept him?” he said. “It wasn’t a lot of money that they sold him for and you’re now looking at arguably the best midfield player in the country alongside Declan Rice.”
He continued: “I would always put Declan Rice on top of that list, certainly at the end of last season when he helped Arsenal win the title. It should bode well for England as well going forward, they’ve got two midfielders there who are right at the top of the class in the Premier League.”
Rice was central to Arsenal’s Premier League success last season. His ability to control games and contribute at both ends has made him the benchmark for midfielders in the division. Carragher’s ranking places the Arsenal man clearly ahead of Anderson despite the latter’s impressive start at City.
The Anfield result has intensified the early title race between the two clubs. Arsenal will look to respond when they face Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday. Rice’s continued influence remains a key factor in the defending champions’ bid to retain the league.
Carragher’s comments also highlight the strength of England’s midfield options. With Rice and Anderson both performing at a high level, the national team has two players capable of dominating matches. Arsenal’s midfielder continues to set the standard according to the former Liverpool defender.
