Bills' Wild Monday Night Win Changes Patriots' AFC East Outlook image
The New England Patriots entered Monday night hoping the Los Angeles Rams would do them a favor.
Instead, Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills found another way to win. Buffalo escaped Los Angeles with a dramatic 37-34 overtime victory Monday, improving to 4-1 and maintaining its position atop the AFC East. The result leaves New England at 3-2, one game behind its biggest division rival despite beating Buffalo just eight days earlier.
For Mike Vrabel's Patriots, the result was disappointing but hardly disastrous. New England has won two consecutive games, its offense is showing significant improvement, and the schedule presents opportunities to build momentum. However, Monday's outcome reinforced something Patriots fans already understood. Taking the division away from Allen and the Bills will not be easy.
AFC East Race Takes Another Turn
The Bills appeared vulnerable during several stretches against the Rams. Matthew Stafford threw for 383 yards and three touchdowns, while Puka Nacua caught 17 passes for 138 yards and a score. Los Angeles repeatedly challenged Buffalo's defense, and the game eventually required overtime.

Even then, the Rams had an opportunity to win.
Buffalo defensive end Greg Rousseau blocked a field-goal attempt in overtime, giving Allen another possession. The quarterback helped move the Bills into position for Tyler Bass, who connected from 45 yards to secure the victory. Allen finished with 210 passing yards and 121 rushing yards. James Cook added 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The win kept Buffalo one game ahead of New England, but the Patriots still own an important early-season advantage. New England defeated Buffalo 29-26 on October 4, giving the Patriots the head-to-head edge should the teams eventually finish with identical records.
That result could become increasingly significant as the season progresses.
Patriots Have Opportunity to Apply Pressure
New England's immediate assignment is Sunday's home matchup against the New York Jets. The Jets improved to 2-3 with a 17-12 victory over Cleveland, making them a more dangerous opponent than their record might suggest.
The Patriots then travel to Chicago for a Thursday night matchup with the Bears on October 22. Those games will test New England's ability to maintain its offensive momentum while navigating a difficult turnaround between contests.
Meanwhile, Buffalo visits Las Vegas on Sunday before entering its Week 7 bye. The Bills remain in control of the division race, but New England has already demonstrated that it can beat them.
The Patriots will get another opportunity when Buffalo visits Gillette Stadium on December 6. Until then, the formula is straightforward. Keep winning, avoid damaging divisional losses and remain close enough to make the rematch matter.
Monday night did not eliminate New England's opportunity to repeat as AFC East champions. It simply made the road a little more demanding.
