Anthony Edwards sends warning to NBA as Knicks suffer another ugly preseason loss

Anthony Edwards sends warning to NBA as Knicks suffer another ugly preseason loss image

Anthony Edwards looks ready for the NBA regular season. The defending champion New York Knicks might need a little more time. Edwards scored 26 points Monday night as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated New York 122-104 at Madison Square Garden.

The win improved Minnesota to 3-1 during the preseason, while the Knicks dropped to 0-3.

Preseason results rarely determine how successful a team will become during the regular season. However, the performance provided another encouraging sign for Minnesota and raised questions about New York's preparation for its championship defense.

The Timberwolves controlled much of the contest, using impressive perimeter shooting and balanced offensive production to build a comfortable advantage.

Edwards finished with 26 points, including five three-pointers. The Minnesota star also delivered one of the evening's most memorable moments when he connected on a long buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the first half. The shot helped the Timberwolves carry a 62-50 advantage into halftime.

Minnesota continued controlling the game after the break.

Jaden McDaniels added 22 points, giving the Timberwolves another productive offensive option. Minnesota finished 18-of-34 from three-point range, converting more than half its attempts from beyond the arc.

New York, meanwhile, connected on only eight of its 32 three-point attempts. That difference played a significant role in the final margin. The Timberwolves demonstrated how dangerous their offense can become when multiple players consistently make outside shots.

Knicks still searching for preseason rhythm

Jalen Brunson led New York with 20 points. However, the Knicks struggled to generate enough consistent offense to keep pace with Minnesota. The loss followed earlier preseason losses against Philadelphia and Washington. New York has now dropped three consecutive exhibition games.

Coach Mike Brown indicated after Monday's contest that he has intentionally kept the offense relatively simple during the preseason.

The approach allows the coaching staff to evaluate how players execute basic actions and respond when opponents anticipate their movements. That explanation provides some context for the uneven performances.

Still, the Knicks will want to establish better rhythm before the regular season begins.

What's next for both

New York is scheduled to face Toronto on Tuesday, creating a quick opportunity to respond. For Minnesota, Monday's result offered another reason for optimism.

Edwards continues to demonstrate his ability to dominate offensively, while the supporting cast has shown encouraging versatility.

The regular season will present significantly greater challenges. But if Monday's performance is any indication, Edwards and the Timberwolves are approaching opening night with plenty of confidence.
