49ers remain undefeated after unlikely defensive hero changes everything against Seahawks image
The San Francisco 49ers are still perfect. One of the biggest reasons might surprise even their own fans.
Rookie defensive tackle Gracen Halton delivered a game-changing performance Sunday as San Francisco defeated the Seattle Seahawks 32-29 in a dramatic NFC West matchup.
The win improved the 49ers to 5-0 and strengthened their position as one of the NFL's early championship contenders.
While San Francisco received important offensive contributions from Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and Mike Evans, its defense created the opportunities that ultimately decided the game.
Halton played a particularly important role. The rookie recorded his first career sack and produced a defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery. His performance highlighted the depth of a San Francisco defense capable of generating momentum-changing plays.
Gracen Halton delivers game-changing touchdown
The biggest moment came shortly before halftime. Halton forced and recovered a fumble, returning the ball for a touchdown and helping San Francisco build a 21-13 advantage at the break. The play changed the direction of a closely contested game.
Seattle had opportunities to generate offense, but turnovers repeatedly prevented the Seahawks from establishing control. San Francisco forced four turnovers and converted those mistakes into 21 points.
Cornerback Renardo Green also played a major role, intercepting two passes. The 49ers demonstrated how effective their defense can become when it consistently creates additional possessions for the offense.
That ability proved especially important against a division rival capable of producing explosive plays.

49ers find another way to win
Purdy completed 19 of 29 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns. McCaffrey contributed 68 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Evans caught seven passes for 113 yards and a score. The offensive production helped San Francisco remain competitive throughout the afternoon.
However, Seattle refused to disappear.
Sam Darnold threw for 195 yards and a touchdown, although his two interceptions proved costly. Jaxon Smith-Njigba finished with 102 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The Seahawks also received five field goals from Jason Myers.
Despite those contributions, Seattle couldn't complete the comeback.
Eddy Pineiro connected on a 44-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining, providing the decisive points. The victory moved San Francisco to 3-0 in NFC West competition. That divisional success could become particularly important later in the season.
At 5-0, the 49ers have established themselves among the league's strongest teams. Their offense features recognizable stars capable of winning games.
Sunday showed that their defense also has emerging contributors who can completely change a contest. Halton might not have entered the weekend as a household name. His performance against Seattle ensured considerably more NFL fans know who he is now.
