New midfielders who arrive for large fees often need time to understand the specific demands of their new team. Starting opportunities can be limited at first while existing partnerships continue to perform. Former players who know the club well tend to emphasise patience during that period of adjustment.
The balance between individual quality and collective spacing is rarely automatic. Players who have been regular starters elsewhere must learn when and where to press, and how much space the rest of the side will leave behind them. That process can take several matches before the full impact is seen.
A difficult afternoon for the whole team does not always define a new signing’s future. Recovery through substitute appearances that change the result can restore momentum. Legends who watched the early stages of a career at the club often look for signs that the player is prepared to adapt rather than force an immediate role.
Nigel Winterburn has told Bruno Guimaraes he must “learn the Arsenal way” and remain patient before becoming a regular starter, according to Metro. The former left-back spoke after Guimaraes scored the winner as a substitute in the 2-1 victory over Leeds.
Arsenal signed the Brazilian from Newcastle for £75 million in the summer. He has made four Premier League appearances, with only one start so far. That start came in the 3-0 defeat at Brighton, after which he was replaced by Mikel Merino. He has since scored as a substitute against both Sunderland and Leeds.
Asked what Guimaraes needs to do to cement his place, Winterburn said: “Learn the Arsenal way. I think he has a brilliant temperament. He’s used to playing, but he came on against Sunderland and scored, then came on again and scored, changing the momentum alongside Arteta’s other substitutions. It’s about patience and understanding what’s required of him, while the other players learn how he plays and make sure the team doesn’t leave as much space.”
Winterburn described the Brighton performance as a bad day for the team rather than an individual issue. “I’d call the Brighton match a bad day, but Brighton were excellent with and without the ball, particularly in their pressing. They won all the battles. I don’t think you can single out one Arsenal player. None of them came out of that game with many positives. With Bruno, it’s a case of waiting and continuing to work with him. You can see his quality on the ball.”
Myles Lewis-Skelly has started alongside Declan Rice in recent matches and has performed well. Guimaraes has therefore been used mainly from the bench, where he has already influenced two results. Winterburn’s comments focus on the need for the midfielder and his teammates to adapt to each other.
The former Arsenal defender also discussed Riccardo Calafiori, who has started every Premier League game this season. Winterburn said he was not surprised by the left-back’s form and noted that Arteta has previously called him a “free spirit”. He added that Calafiori offers more going forward than defensively but remains a capable defender.
Winterburn’s message to Guimaraes centres on temperament and collective understanding. The Brazilian has already shown he can affect games from the bench. Further opportunities will depend on how quickly he and the rest of the midfield align with the requirements of Arteta’s system.
