Three out of the four AFC East teams came away with a win in Week 5. Only one team won by double digit points, and the one loss that happened was within a score. Overall, it was a close week in the division, but it meant so much for the Buffalo Bills going into Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams.
Right now, the race for the top is between the Bills and New England Patriots and it's closer than Bills fans want it to be. However, Bills Mafia can enjoy the fact that Buffalo will remain at the top of the division for atleast one more week.
With Week 5 officially over, here are the updated standings for the division going into mid-October.
Updated AFC East standings after Week 5
1.) Buffalo Bills (4-1)
Def. Los Angeles Rams, 37-34 (OT)
It was a thriller of a win for the Bills as they took down the Rams in overtime, winning 37-34. Once the second half came, it was an electric football game with 48 total points being scored to force overtime, and then the Bills winning off of a Tyler Bass game-winning field goal.
The Bills needed to win this game because if they didn't, they would have lost control of the AFC East to the New England Patriots. Since the Patriots had beaten the Bills in Week 4, they own the tiebreaker and they are just half a game behind Buffalo. Since they beat the Raiders, they could have taken the division from Buffalo if they lost to the Rams. Luckily, the Bills survived and they will head to Las Vegas for a Week 6 battle against the Raiders.
2.) New England Patriots (3-2)
Def. Las Vegas Raiders, 45-17
The Patriots have won two consecutive games now after their 45-17 beatdown of the Raiders in Foxborough. Drake Maye looks like the MVP-runner up that we saw last season, and the Patriots are looking to take back the AFC East from the Bills. New England will be back at home in Week 6 where they will host the New York Jets.
3.) New York Jets (2-3)
Def. Cleveland Browns, 17-12
After dropping their last three games, the Jets got back into the win column with a 17-12 win over the Cleveland Browns. Running back Braelon Allen rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown in a rainy game in MetLife, which helped put the Jets back in the win column.
Now they will head to New England to take on the Patriots in what will be a tough division. Bills fans should be hoping that the Jets can go into Foxborough and upset the Patriots.
4.) Miami Dolphins (0-5)
Lost vs. Cincinnati Bengals, 31-24
The Dolphins might remain winless, but there is no denying that they play hard. Even though they lost 31-24 to the Cincinnati Bengals, they are showing a ton of fight this season. There is a realistic setup where they could go 0-17, but because they are playing tough football under Jeff Hafley, there are due for a win at some point this season. They head into their bye week for Week 6 and will have extra time to prepare for the Jets in Week 7.
