Hull City missed out on an estimated £99m as a result of Manchester City's Premier League rule breaches, according to a recent report.

The BBC has looked into the season's affected, with the Tigers relegated from the top flight during the 2016-17 campaign after finishing 18th.

There's an argument to be had that clubs finishing in 18th spot could have avoided relegation if City had not breached financial regulations.

Man City took four points off the Tigers during that campaign and assembled a strong squad, spending huge sums on players.

BBC Sport has used the total prize money earned by the team finishing in 20th in the following season, which would show a minimum return for having stayed in the top flight.

Parachute payments have been deducted from the overall fee to arrive at a net amount, with the Tigers benefiting from those financial measures in the years that followed.

Hull City were relegated twice, which cost them £93.78m, and finished behind Man City four times, adding a further £5.2m in place money to the sum.

Only Tottenham Hotspur, who lost out on £119.9m, as a result of missing out on Champions League football to City on several occasions.

City filed an appeal against the damning ruling that found them in breach of Premier League financial regulations, where they were found guilty of all but one of their alleged 115 charges. An independent commission found City guilty in a report released last month.

A statement on mancity.com read: "Manchester City Football Club can confirm that, at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026, the club lodged its comprehensive appeal against the opinion of the Premier League commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter.

"The club's firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe.

"The club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions relating to this case.

"We will continue to respect due process and are necessarily restricted in what we can say further until all proceedings are complete."
