Andoni Iraola provides fitness update on Liverpool trio ahead of LASK clash

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola meets the media in Linz on Tuesday afternoon as he prepares his side for their Champions League clash with LASK.

The Reds travel to Austria for their second league-phase fixture of the competition, with the match scheduled to take place at the Raiffeisen Arena on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool will be looking to build on their opening victory against Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

The Champions League follows the disappointing 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, leaving Iraola with plenty to address as his side prepares for a demanding run of fixtures.

Dominik Szoboszlai missed the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday and has not travelled with the Liverpool squad to Linz. Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo are also injured.

Iraola has provided an update on their fitness.

“They are not bad but it’s difficult to tell right now (when they will be back). We are taking it day to day. Really the three of them, I don’t know if it’s going to be Brentford or Villarreal.”

Hungary team-mate Milos Kerkez was asked whether Szoboszlai could make the trip to Brentford this weekend.

“I don’t know if he is fit for Saturday. You’ll have to ask the gaffer that,” Kerkez said.

He then spoke about Szoboszlai’s mentality. “I know Dom and he doesn’t like to be out long. Knowing him, he wants to play every game and will want to play Saturday.”

With the trio currently out, Iraola has thrown the gauntlet to Bradley Barcola, Florian Wirtz and other members of the Liverpool squad.

“It’s true Cody, Alex and Dom are the top scorers in our system,” Iraola said. “We don’t have them, we didn’t have them against City and we need those players to give us those numbers. We trust the players we have now to play in those positions.”

He accepted that injuries on international duty affect every club.

“Injuries with national teams will happen to all the teams,” he said. “It’s a matter of adapting to circumstances.”
