The three week international break came at a good time for Chelsea – after starting the season well they had suddenly gone four games without a win, and injuries were mounting.
The team needed a reset, and every extra day working with new manager Xabi Alonso was potentially useful. It did increase the pressure on the game against Bournemouth, however. All of those good reasons to expect improvements meant that a bad showing would have been even less tolerable.
Fortunately the team met and even exceeded the expectations of those who wanted to see them come back with a bang. Anyone who had been backing the Blues on a top betting website like Oddsbonuser.nu will have been laughing within three minutes. Chelsea were two goals ahead by then, and never looked back.
The pattern of early goals under Xabi Alonso has been one of the most important features of his time in charge so far. In this case it gave the team a great platform to play from, and they were able to pick off their opposition at will after that.
It wasn’t all good – the team were still unable to keep a clean sheet, extending their quite incredible run of games without one yet again. But overall things were good, and the confidence boost of coming back from the break with fresh, fit players and new additions to the group like Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra will be huge.
This should be another really positive week at Cobham as the disruptions of late summer fade and the next phase of the season begins. Our lack of European fixtures really starts to benefit us now as Alonso looks at a free week ahead, ending with our visit to Everton on Saturday.
While the other top teams prepare for vital European games, we can rest and recover. After Everton, we’ve got a fascinating run that will tell us a lot about how far this team have come. Spurs at home in the Premier League, then Liverpool in the EFL Cup in midweek, then Man U at home days later. It’s a challenging series of games, but one we can’t wait for as we look to see further concrete evidence that Alonso is making his changes stick.
Spurs and Man U are struggling, and Liverpool will likely have to rotate more than us due to their European commitments this week. Three wins in a row is a big ask – but by no means impossible. It’s a sign of how things have improved that that’s even something we can dream of.
