"I Didn't Think I'd Get This Far" - Marc Guehi Lifts Lid on UEFA Champions League Dream Ahead of PSG Clash

Marc Guehi has spoken about handling nerves and playing in the UEFA Champions League ahead of Manchester City's group-phase meeting with Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Guehi, 26, is one of four members of Enzo Maresca's captaincy group for the 2026/27 season, alongside Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The England international started in defence for Sunday's win at Anfield, where he lined up alongside Dias, Matheus Nunes and Nico O'Reilly in a back line that kept a clean sheet against Liverpool.

Manchester City enter the fixture on the back of a 3-0 victory over Liverpool, a result that kept them top of the Premier League and unbeaten in the league this season.

The game came in the middle of a difficult period off the pitch, with the club lodging an appeal on 1 October against an independent commission's finding that they breached the Premier League's financial rules during 2009-18.

Wednesday's opponents are reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain and after leaving Anfield on Sunday with a commanding win over Liverpool, Maresca and co are full of confidence as they take on arguably the best team in world football.

I've never really dreamt of playing in the Champions League, admits humble Guehi ahead of PSG test

Speaking to UEFA ahead of the game, Guehi said: "Nerves are natural. I'd say I get nervous before a game, but my mindset is as long as I've prepared and done everything before, whatever happens, happens," as quoted by official Manchester City media.

"Of course we all want the outcome to be a win, a good performance. But if I know I prepared right, taken care of my body, trained with the right intensity and mindset then I'm very comfortable with what happens."

On his first full season competing in Europe's elite club competition, Guehi added: "It's a lot of excitement. Fulfilment of a dream? I've never really dreamt of playing Champions League because I didn't think I'd get this far.

"But I'm very very grateful and just want my gratitude to grow even more by playing more games and hopefully achieve something great with this club. The Club's ambition is to win everything all the time."

What did the summer look like for Guehi?

Guehi has also had a busy year with England, having featured at the FIFA World Cup under Thomas Tuchel in the summer and committing a huge error that directly led to Spain's Lamine Yamal scoring against the Three Lions in a 3-2 win for La Roja at Wembley in the recent international break.

Tuchel said in September that City's off-field charges were not a distraction for the England players involved in the defeat to Spain, a group that included Guehi.

The Champions League brings a different level of opposition to the Premier League, with PSG arriving as the reigning champions of Europe and Manchester City looking to build on a strong start to a new era at the club under Maresca.

The independent commission's verdict, which found the club guilty on 114 of 115 charges of breaching the Premier League's financial rules, remains a backdrop to the season while the appeal process continues.

However, Guehi and his Manchester City teammates showed the world on Sunday that they remain focused on matters on the pitch as goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki secured a monumental triumph in front of a hostile Anfield faithful.
