Last week, Everton were rocked with the news that current owners The Friedkin Group would be selling the club. It was a poorly kept secret that they would be selling, but this might have come sooner than expected.
It was announced that The Friedkin Group (TFG) have put Everton up for sale earlier this month, less than two years after their takeover saw the group take over as owners. The news has been long expected, with reports of TFG’s willingness to take on new investment only emphasising they wouldn’t be there long term.
TFG will leave Everton in a much healthier place than when they took charge, which makes it a surprise they are so eager to get out of the club, with buyers thought to be lining up to take ownership of the Toffees. But there may be a compelling reason behind their desire to sell up sooner than later and it involves Roma.
What is your message to The Friedkin Group as they put the club up for sale? 😳
Well said Terry how's the golf Going
The problem is if you are the owners of a football club you have to keep a eye on your bank account
Just wonder if any of them could break into one of the top spots this season. Would really love to see that. 👍
TFG may be planning for Everton getting European football
TFG own Roma alongside Everton, and a few other clubs, but the way this season is going, the two flagship sides are looking set to qualify for European football.
Paddy Boyland has been speaking to The Blue Room EFC and has suggested that TFG may be looking to get out of Everton sooner than expected due to concerns they have around potentially ending up with two clubs in Europe.
“I don’t think it was really ever going to be a long long-term investment for the for The Friedkin Group, but I think they’re from what I’m hearing they’re getting out quicker than initially envisaged.
“And there you can point to a whole load of things, but for me, you’ve got two clubs in Everton and Roma on the same level. You’ve got the multi- club problem. What happens if both qualify for the same European competition despite what they said last season? That’s still unresolved, and that’s a massive problem.”
This comes with Everton looking to be in the race for European football this season, sitting unbeaten and fifth in the league, all without proper investment or support for David Moyes’ overperforming side right now.

Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Diff Points
3 6 4 1 1 18 5 13 13
4 6 2 4 0 12 6 6 10
5 6 2 4 0 8 5 3 10
6 6 3 1 2 15 13 2 10
7 6 2 3 1 8 5 3 9
On current form, Everton would be looking at Champions League football, which would be a massive result, but also could be complicated if TFG were also in charge of Roma and they also qualifed.
What are the actual rules around multi-club ownership in European football?
It may be presumptious to assume TFG are expecting Everton to be in European competition next season, but they very well might considering the strong start and how poor some of the expected European qualifiers are.
But if both Everton and Roma both qualified for, the Europa League for arguments sake, would TFG be in a bad position. The answer is a resounding yes.
This is because TFG holds near total control over both Roma with 96% and Everton with 94.1%, which would see UEFA rule that they have decisive influence over both, which is the bar for action to be taken.
If both did qualify and TFG haven’t managed to sell Everton, then it would mean the club playing in the league ranked lower in the coefficient would be pushed down to the competition below. Which would likely be Roma in this case.
So with this hurdle clear and a potential issue on the horizon for TFG, it would make sense to just cut ties and allow Everton to hopefully get owners in who will invest and back the club to actually go on and reach Europe.
