Arsenal beat Lille 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night to make it two wins from two in this season’s Champions League.
Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka scored all three goals in a seven-minute spell in the second half.
The Premier League champions had to be patient. They led possession with 58% but were goalless at half-time, and they have now gone five games in the league and Champions League without scoring in the first half.
Timber broke the deadlock in the 64th minute, lofting the ball over goalkeeper Berke Ozer after a pass from Noni Madueke. Saka then came off the bench and set up Eze three minutes later before scoring himself in the 71st minute.
Elsewhere in the competition, Bayern Munich dropped points in Norway.
Viking led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Gianni Stensness, who headed in a Tripic corner in the second minute, and Peter Christiansen in the 38th.
Harry Kane responded for Bayern after the break with a penalty in the 54th minute and a second goal in the 60th. Luis Diaz made it 3-2 in the 71st. Substitute Herman Haugen then headed in the equaliser in the 90th minute to give Viking a 3-3 draw.
The result matters to Arsenal, who travel to the Allianz Arena to face Bayern on 21 October.
The draw also came at a cost for the German side, as winger Michael Olise was sent off and will miss that game.
Olise was booked for a foul and received a second yellow card for throwing the ball at Tripic’s face in front of the referee. It was the first red card of his career.
The second yellow carries a one-match Champions League suspension, so Olise will be absent in Munich.
Kane said after the match that Michael Olise “has to take responsibility for it”. The England captain said the red card changed the game.
Arsenal’s win was their 14th in a row in the Champions League group stage. It was also their ninth victory in ten matches in all competitions this season.
The night carried a sombre note at the Emirates.
Arsenal announced earlier on Tuesday that life president Ken Friar had died aged 92, and the players wore black armbands in his memory.
Former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud came on for Lille in the 78th minute.
