Lille deserve considerable credit for their performance against Arsenal, as the Ligue 1 side held firm for around an hour before Mikel Arteta’s substitutes came on and changed the game.
This is the second consecutive match in which Arsenal have relied on their bench to overcome a difficult opponent. Lille proved to be a tough team to break down, showing resilience and organisation throughout the contest.
It was only Arsenal’s second match since the international break, and the team may need more time to regain their rhythm and start dominating games from the opening whistle. Nevertheless, they secured an impressive 3-0 victory, despite a first half that left plenty of room for improvement.
Arsenal show their quality after the break
Lille remained competitive for much of the first half, demonstrating why they have been among the best teams in Ligue 1 since the start of this season. Arsenal struggled to establish complete control initially, with their opponents making life difficult for the home side.
However, Arsenal’s superior quality eventually proved decisive. Arteta’s substitutions helped change the momentum, allowing the Gunners to become more effective and secure a convincing victory. Their performance after the interval demonstrated their ability to respond when a match does not initially go according to plan.
The result also highlighted Arsenal’s growing reliance on their substitutes in consecutive games. Although their ability to find solutions is encouraging, they will want to produce stronger performances from the start as they continue to build momentum following the international break.

McCoist delivers his verdict
Ally McCoist acknowledged Arsenal’s disappointing first half but praised the quality they displayed after the interval. His assessment reflected the clear difference between the two periods, as the Gunners improved considerably to finish the match as comfortable winners.
As reported by BBC Live, McCoist said:
“Bang average first half, but real real quality in the second, making them comfortable winners with a clean sheet.”
Ultimately, Arsenal secured a fine 3-0 win and kept a clean sheet. Lille can take credit for their determined performance, particularly in the first half, but Arsenal’s quality and effective second half response ultimately made the difference.
