Gerrard backs Henderson for a bigger Chelsea role

Gerrard says Henderson deserves more than a squad-player label

--------------------------------------------------------------

Gerrard made his case during an appearance on The Overlap, arguing that Henderson’s career and continuing ability to contribute make the description reductive. Henderson joined Chelsea on a free transfer after his Brentford contract expired, a move covered in our report on [Henderson’s free transfer to Chelsea](https://chelsea.news/2026/07/jordan-henderson-chelsea-free-transfer/).

That defence came with a qualification: Gerrard accepts the 36-year-old will not play every game. He said there are more respectful ways to explain that reality to a player, rather than defining his role by the expectation of fewer minutes.

Gerrard related the issue to his own experience at Liverpool, where manager Brendan Rodgers told him that his playing time and contribution would decline. Gerrard said he still regarded himself as Liverpool’s best central midfielder at the time, while recognising others might have seen it differently.

He also drew a comparison with James Milner and other players in their 30s, suggesting the squad-player label can rankle when it overlooks what an experienced footballer believes he can still offer. Gerrard managed Henderson for six months at Al-Ettifaq and said he wished the midfielder had stayed, describing him as a strong professional and a positive presence for teammates and coaches.

Gerrard’s assessment was not that Henderson remains at his peak. Rather, he believes the midfielder still has a strong season in him and that Xabi Alonso will need to judge carefully when to use him and what role to give him.

That balance is already relevant at Stamford Bridge. The primary report noted that Chelsea had sold Enzo Fernandez without bringing in a replacement and that several players’ workloads needed careful management, giving Henderson a route to an important role without making him an automatic starter.

Henderson made an emphatic case for his value in Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, 10 October, scoring twice and assisting Morgan Rogers. The display made him the oldest player to be directly involved in three goals in a Premier League match, and the oldest for any English top-flight club to achieve that since Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United in April 2022.

Rogers also praised Henderson’s fitness and footballing quality, crediting the veteran with showing that his experience has not come at the expense of his ability to contribute on the pitch. Chelsea’s summer additions also included experienced players, with [Henderson arriving alongside Danny Welbeck](https://chelsea.news/2026/07/chelsea-double-signing-welbeck-henderson/).

Henderson’s arrival followed the expiry of his Brentford deal, with Chelsea securing the midfielder without a transfer fee.

His Bournemouth performance offered a striking early return, but Gerrard’s point was about the broader role: managed minutes need not mean a player is merely a squad option.
