Bournemouth has dropped its stance of no sale for Alex Scott, according to reports, but it will cost Liverpool a lot of money to sign the midfielder in the January transfer window.

It follows months of speculation over the England international's future, as he enters the final two years of his contract with the Cherries, with plenty of interest rising from clubs across the world.

Considering Liverpool's own needs in the central ranks, it's a move that may make sense. The Reds have struggled with the balance in midfield, with plenty of options who want to attack, but perhaps lacking those who are willing to have the same defensive positional sense.

It's a balance that Andoni Iraola is still looking to strike with his players, having rotated through a mixture of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Florian Wirtz so far this season.

In Scott, there is a player who knows what it takes to play for the Spanish coach. The 23-year-old has featured 89 times for Iraola in his time at Bournemouth, progressing from a promising youngster to a genuine Premier League star.

Having helped guide the south coast team to Europe, and landing his first caps with the England national team, the midfielder is a player on the rise, and a move could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

While Bournemouth was seemingly against any sale, hopeful that a new contract could be agreed that included a release clause in it, it seems as though that stance has softened.

According to BBC Sport, the club is now open to a sale in the January transfer window after discussions with the player's representatives, with any move set to be priced at £100 million ($132.6 million).

Liverpool is linked with a switch in the report, alongside Chelsea, while Manchester United, Manchester City, and Tottenham were all credited with interest in the summer.

The Reds, however, are believed to be in a strong position. It's claimed that Iraola has maintained close relationships with both Bournemouth and Scott himself, which could give him the ultimate trump card over rivals to the midfielder's signature in the market.

That may ultimately depend on whether Liverpool is willing to put the money forward for a deal in January, having avoided making a move for a midfielder in the recent summer transfer window.

Considering the recent expenses spent on arrivals, some of whom topping the $150 million mark, it's unclear whether those funds would be immediately available for a mid-season arrival, which could open the door to the club's rivals to make a swoop.

It all sets up an interesting situation for the hierarchy at Anfield, who will need to make some tough decisions heading into the winter market.
