Liverpool may be looking to sell Jeremie Frimpong in the near future, and it now looks as though they may be targeting a Serie A right-back to replace him.

The Dutchman has flattered to deceive hugely since joining the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, not providing enough quality and looking physically weak.

In fact, former scout Mick Brown claimed that the writing is on the wall for Frimpong at Liverpool, having not been a sufficient successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold:

“Liverpool are now starting to realise what a lot of us already knew about Jeremie Frimpong. I’ve always had doubts about how good he was, and it was a surprise when Liverpool identified him as the player they wanted to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold last year.

“He’s okay going forward, but his defensive work leaves a lot to be desired, and when you’re playing in games like the one against Man City that is going to get exposed. They brought on Jeremy Doku, and Frimpong couldn’t handle him, he caused him huge problems and then Cherki sent him flying for his goal as well.

“You could hear on commentary, Jamie Carragher wasn’t happy with him, and that will come from watching him every week, they’re starting to realise he is not Liverpool standard.”

According to TuttoMercatoWeb [via Caught Offside], Liverpool are eyeing Juventus right-back Pierre Kalulu, with the 26-year-old one of their leading options to replace Frimpong in that position.

That said, Juve are keen on tying the Frenchman down to a new contract – his current deal runs until 2029 – with Roma’s Wesley Franca seen as a potential alternative option for the Reds.

Would Pierre Kalulu be an ideal signing for Liverpool?

Kalulu stands out as a strong option for Liverpool to bring in at right-back in 2027, with former France manager Didier Deschamps lauding him in the past:

“It’s the first time for him, as for Rayan Cherki. Kalulu is having a great season with Juventus. He was also great for Milan. He has the ability to be used in two roles. At Juventus, he plays more in a three-man defence, but he can also play right back.

“We’ve been following him for a while, his call-up is more or less linked to the absences in defence, but I also plan to be able to give a shake-up, to draw lessons for myself, for the staff, also in view of future deadlines. Then it will be up to them to earn confirmation, there is always a lot of competition. After the injury, which really penalised him and slowed him down, he has found an excellent form.”

With all due respect to Frimpong, he isn’t the answer for Liverpool unless he improves drastically this season, and Kalulu could offer more solidity from right-back, battling Conor Bradley for minutes.

The Juve man has averaged 2.2 clearances and two tackles per game in Serie A this season, compared to Frimpong’s tally of 1.8 and one in the Premier League, respectively, and he should continue to be viewed as a good choice.

In fairness to Frimpong, he is at his best as a wing-back, which Andoni Iraola doesn’t deploy, but it is difficult to see him being a Liverpool player next season.
