Changes in a player’s representation can follow a transfer window in which a desired move does not materialise. Clubs that were linked with the player often continue to watch developments, particularly when the contract still has several years to run. The identity of the new agent can influence how future negotiations are approached.
Strikers who can operate across the front line attract interest from sides looking for versatility. Experience of Premier League football adds another factor for English clubs assessing potential targets. High valuations set by the current club remain the main barrier even when the player has previously indicated a willingness to leave.
A summer in which one club refused to negotiate with a preferred destination leaves the player’s situation unresolved. Accusations directed at previous advisers can create an opportunity for a fresh approach. The timing of any subsequent move depends on both the player’s form and the willingness of the selling club to lower its demands.
Julian Alvarez has ended his relationship with long-term agent Fernando Hidalgo, according to Spanish reports. The Atletico Madrid forward was represented by Hidalgo from his time at River Plate through his moves to Manchester City and Atletico. The split follows a summer in which Alvarez wanted to leave but remained at the club.
Alvarez publicly stated his desire to depart during the World Cup, with Barcelona his preferred destination. Atletico refused to negotiate a move to their domestic rivals. Arsenal were heavily linked before the deadline, yet no transfer was completed. He remains under contract at Atletico until 2030.
The fallout was public. Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin accused the player’s representative of misleading and confusing his client. The club is reported not to hold Alvarez himself responsible, and some suggestions indicate that the change of agent is viewed positively at the Metropolitano.
Mundo Deportivo reports that Alvarez has chosen Pablo Barquero, who also represents Rodri, as his new agent. A formal agreement is expected imminently. Other agencies, including those linked to Javier Pastore and Jorge Mendes, were said to have held talks. Alvarez’s father is understood to have taken a leading role in the process.
A new agent does not mean a transfer is imminent. Reports differ on the likelihood of a January move, with some viewing next summer as the more realistic window. Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has indicated that the club is no longer interested, which removes one competitor if Alvarez does become available.
Arsenal’s interest remains logical given Alvarez’s ability to play as a centre-forward, second striker or winger. He presses effectively and has previous experience in England. Director of football Andrea Berta was involved in the 2024 deal that took him to Atletico. The reported valuation of around €150 million continues to be the main obstacle.
Alvarez scored 20 goals in 52 games last season, including one in the Champions League semi-final against Arsenal. Nothing has changed in his performances, but the change in his advisers gives clubs reason to continue monitoring the situation. Arsenal are among those watching how the next phase develops.
