With the January transfer window just around the corner, an opportunity to sign Alex Scott has appeared, with Liverpool among those heavily linked with a switch

Liverpool may have to break an unwritten rule surrounding the January transfer window if the team is to land Alex Scott ahead of its rivals in the coming months.
It follows reports revealing that Bournemouth's stance on the midfielder has softened leading up to the winter market, with a potential sale now on the cards for the 23-year-old.
Scott has entered the final two years under contract with the Cherries, who had initially set a firm stance against sanctioning an exit, while hoping to negotiate a new contract that could have included a release clause to help seal an exit if an appropriate offer arrived.
Instead, after recent discussions with the player's representatives, it seems as though an exit could be on the cards as soon as January, with a price tag set at roughly $132 million.
There are plenty of suitors in the mix, with Liverpool among them, which could see Andoni Iraola reunite with his former midfielder in the near future.
Interest is also there from Chelsea, which had tried to lodge an offer in the summer, as well as recent links to Arsenal that have emerged in recent days.
Should Liverpool want to land Scott, the club will need to break an unwritten rule by spending a large sum of money during the January transfer window, something that is often reserved for the summer.
The winter market is often seen as a place of desperation, as teams try and solve problems that can often come with expensive solutions, due to it being mid-season. For a team as big as Liverpool, which prides itself on making the right decisions, having to dip into the transfer window during January would look like an admittance of failure elsewhere.

However, in this instance, it may be viewed more as an opportunity instead. While Liverpool hasn't often spent big in January, that hasn't been a hard and fast rule that has always been abided by.
Virgil van Dijk was signed for a huge $100 million fee from Southampton in January 2018, proving that the right decisions can be made during a difficult time to do business.
There are other times where the mid-season window has proven useful, with the likes of Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Luis Suarez, and Philippe Coutinho all joining during that time in the market.
It would suggest that, should Liverpool believe it's the right move at the right price, then perhaps the funds will be put forward to land Scott, even though it may be an awkward time to do business with another club.
It remains to be seen whether that is possible, considering the funds that the Reds have already placed in certain areas of the squad, but the opportunity is there if the club can take it.
