Piero Hincapie’s injury appears to be more serious than initially feared, with Mikel Arteta providing an update on the defender’s fitness and what Arsenal supporters can expect in the coming weeks.
The Ecuador international and Martin Zubimendi both picked up injuries in training, ruling them out of Arsenal’s match against Lille because neither was ready to play. With the extended international break now over, the club will hope to have its key players available again as the fixture schedule continues.
Hincapie faces a longer spell out
After Arsenal’s victory over Lille, Arteta discussed the condition of the injured players. His update on Zubimendi was more encouraging, suggesting the midfielder is making good progress towards returning.
However, the manager was less positive when discussing Hincapie. The defender is improving, but Arteta indicated that his problem appears more significant, leaving Arsenal facing the prospect of being without him for several weeks.
That would be a concern for a side already dealing with William Saliba’s absence. Arsenal have options across the squad, but injuries to important players can still put pressure on the team, particularly when matches arrive in quick succession.

Arteta gives injury update
Speaking after the Lille match, Hayters reported Arteta’s assessment of the two players, with the manager explaining that Hincapie’s recovery timeline remains uncertain.
“Zubi is much, much better, Piero is improving but as I said, it looks more significant.
“I think it will be a matter of weeks, we don’t know exactly how many.”
The comments suggest Zubimendi is closer to returning, while Arsenal may have to wait longer before Hincapie is available again. Arteta did not provide an exact number of weeks, so the defender’s progress will need to be monitored.
Arsenal have depth in their squad, but that strength can only help so much if key players continue to pick up injuries. The club will hope both men recover steadily, with Hincapie’s absence potentially creating another challenge for Arteta’s defensive plans.
