Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood says Liverpool should sign Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace to bolster Andoni Iraola's midfield department.

Liverpool lost Curtis Jones in the summer when he was sold to Inter Milan a year before his contract expired, with Trey Nyoni stepping into his slot in the side. Ryan Gravenberch looked good against Manchester City last weekend but was then shown a second yellow card.

"The midfield needs to step up," Sherwood told The Overlap, sponsored by Sky Vegas. "Alexis Mac Allister’s not really been doing it. Gravenberch was a little bit better against Manchester City, then got himself sent off.

"I just think they need an Adam Wharton — someone who just spins it around the corner first time. Someone like that is a different characteristic to what they have in that midfield area. I think they need it."

Wharton, who missed out on playing for England at the World Cup, was valued at as much as $102 million (£78 million) during the summer and stayed put.

But like Alex Scott at Bournemouth, the ex-Blackburn man is a talented player who could be on the move to a bigger club sooner rather than later.

Liverpool star Mac Allister has not been offered a contract extension, and he could perhaps be the obvious next player to replace in the center of the field.

He has spoken a couple of times about wanting to stay, but by the time his existing deal expires, he will be approaching the age of 30, when there are few examples of Liverpool handing out extensions.

"There isn’t a final decision set in stone," Mac Allister told ESPN at the start of the September international break. "The reality is that I still have two years left on my contract.

"In that press conference, because people were asking me about my future, I spoke purely from emotion. I wasn’t judging the club or anything like that.

"In the end, they are the ones who run things and make the decisions, which is completely fine by me. Like I said, I’m going to give my absolute best. I have two years left. A lot can happen in two years; there are plenty of possibilities.

"From my side, I really enjoy being where I am. Hopefully, I’ll stay for more years, but if it ends up being just two, that’s fine too.

"I want to enjoy this time with my family because I have no doubt that this is one of the best clubs in the world."
