The consensus opinion regarding Payton Pritchard's two-year, $44.2 million extension — at least among NBA experts — was that the Celtics landed one of basketball's best bargains. The terms of Pritchard's contract suggest that both parties know it, too.

Negotiations between Pritchard and Boston's front office were lengthy, with some wondering whether the two sides would be able to strike a deal before the start of the regular season. In the end, cooler heads prevailed; Pritchard secured the extension he yearned for, while the Celtics locked up one of their most important contributors on a team-friendly deal.

There's more that meets the eye to Pritchard and Boston's latest pact, however. A wrinkle could allow him a chance to improve his financial standing before the contract officially comes to a close.

Here's what you need to know.

How Payton Pritchard's Contract Option Impacts Celtics Future

By agreeing terms to his contract extension, Pritchard locked down his short-term future in Boston. His deal comes with a unique wrinkle that gives him more flexibility than is typically made available for a player of his stature.

Pritchard's extension features a mutual out option in the 2029-30 season, per ESPN's Shams Charania. In other words, if either Pritchard or the Celtics feel compelled to sever their ties after the 2028-29 season, they'll be permitted to do so. Pritchard's current deal runs until 2028. His new extension adds an additional season to that contract. Pritchard will earn a shade over $21 million in 2028-29. He can command nearly $23 million in 2029-30, should he and Boston mutually agree to opt into the final year of his deal

All signs point to Pritchard providing good value for the Celtics' investment. He is one of the league's best shooters, canning more than 200 triples in each of his past two seasons. He also tends to stay on the floor, playing 241 of a possible 246 games since the start of the 2023-24 season.

The timing of Pritchard's extension saved Boston from shelling out major money to secure his services. Pritchard's extension carries an average annual value of $22.1 million, similar value to players like Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, Norman Powell and C.J. McCollum. With the salary cap slated to rise to around $185 million in 2028-29, per Real GM, Pritchard's contract should prove even more of a bargain with time.

To that end, Pritchard and Boston's mutual opt-out clause could represent an act of goodwill by the Celtics' front office. Pritchard has been tipped by some to be on the precipice of a breakout in 2026-27. If he were to produce at an All-Star level, he would've stood to see a far higher raise than the one he ended up with.

Ultimately, Pritchard appeared to prefer the environment that surrounds him in Boston to taking his talents elsewhere. His mutual opt-out clause will give him a chance to recoup what he might have missed out on.
