Trump Nearly Attended NFL Game This Weekend
President Donald Trump reportedly came close to attending Sunday’s matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Pittsburgh Steelers, but the planned visit was called off before the weekend.
According to CNN senior White House correspondent Kristen Holmes, Trump was initially expected to attend the game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Sunday, October 18. However, Holmes later reported that the trip had been canceled, leaving fans wondering why the president changed his plans.
No official explanation for the reported cancellation has been made public in the reporting available so far. Here was the public’s reaction to the cancelation:
good, would have been a waste of tax payer dollars
Trump showing up or not is about reason #38 why you wouldn’t go to a Bucs game now, but I’m sure your report made all the difference. Congrats.
I’m a Steelers fan. I was looking forward to seeing my President at the game.

Had Trump made the trip, it reportedly would have marked the first time a sitting U.S. president attended a Buccaneers game. His presence would have brought plenty of attention to a matchup that already features two teams looking to make their mark during the NFL season.

Trump has attended other high-profile football events in recent years. During the 2024 presidential campaign, he attended a Pittsburgh Steelers game against the New York Jets. He also became the first sitting U.S. president to attend a Super Bowl when he was at Super Bowl LIX in February 2025, watching the Philadelphia Eagles face the Kansas City Chiefs.
A presidential appearance in Tampa would have brought an added layer of attention to Sunday’s game, with additional security measures and a larger media presence likely surrounding the stadium. However, with the reported visit now off the table, the focus can return to the matchup between the Buccaneers and Steelers.
Pittsburgh is scheduled to visit Tampa Bay at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. While Trump’s potential appearance generated interest beyond the football field, there is currently no confirmed indication that he will attend.
For now, the biggest unanswered question is why the plans changed. Until the White House provides further details, the reason behind the reported cancellation remains unclear.
