Trae Young has spent years thinking about how to perform at the highest level on the basketball court. But as a father of two young children, the NBA star is now paying closer attention to another part of his life: what his kids eat.

“You definitely look at it more when you’re choosing stuff for your kids, and you want them to be as healthy as possible,” Young, who shares son Tydus Reign, 4, and daughter Teal Dove, 1, with wife Shelby Miller, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Still, Young isn’t looking to take away the treats his kids love. His children are big fans of ice cream and popsicles, he says, which helped draw him to HUNDY!, a frozen fruit pop brand he recently invested in.

His kids have even had a say in his latest business venture. Young says they helped come up with the idea for an upcoming flavor, which is slated for a nationwide retail launch in 2027. When it comes to deciding what tastes good, he says their opinions matter just as much as anyone else’s.

As for his own preferences, Young admits he has a soft spot for one flavor in particular.

“I am a mango person, so if I had to choose one, I’d probably choose that one,” he says.

Beyond snack time, Young is also figuring out how to build family routines around the demands of his NBA career. With his children starting school, he’s looking forward to establishing new traditions at home, particularly around game days.

The upcoming season marks a fresh start for Young, who joined the Washington Wizards in a midseason trade last season.

“Now we’re gonna start some new traditions and new little things that we do before, day before games,” he says. “It’s just a new season. We’re gonna figure some things out this year.”

At home, meanwhile, Young says his kids keep him laughing. Recently, his son walked through a door wearing a Buzz Lightyear costume, giving his dad a glimpse of the vivid imagination he says both children possess.

“They have crazy imaginations and unbelievable imaginations,” Young says. “So it’s really cool to just see how they express themselves.”

Those everyday moments also shape the example Young hopes to set as his children grow up. As he pursues opportunities beyond basketball, he wants them to understand that success isn’t just about professional accomplishments, but also about how they treat others.

Young says he hopes his children learn the importance of giving back and making people happy, values he tries to demonstrate in his own life.

“I genuinely care about seeing other people happy and making sure everybody else is feeling good,” he says.
