Young Liverpool forward Lewis Koumas, who was on loan in the Championship with Hull City last season, was exceptional for the Reds in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Scoring and assisting against LASK in Austria, Koumas became only the second Liverpool player aged 21 or under to do both in a single European game after Steven Gerrard.

Wales international Koumas set up Bradley Barcola's first goal before scoring in the 72nd minute, having had two good efforts ruled out for offside. Gerrard was the first to achieve the feat for Liverpool, doing so against Dynamo Kyiv back in October 2001.

"Yes Reds! A great win away," Koumas said on a video for club media. "Important to bounce back from the last game and buzzing to get on the scoresheet in the Champions League. See you soon."

As well as a Barcola hat-trick and Koumas' goal, Ronald Araujo and Jeremie Frimpong also netted for Liverpool in a big win. LASK only scored its three goals in the final third of a very one-sided game.

"I’m really happy for Bradley," Andoni Iraola said. "You were asking me yesterday about him not making the numbers, and also Florian [Wirtz].

"Both of them played really really well. They made the difference. Bradley, apart from the hat-trick, I think he was always a threat, one versus one, threatening in behind. I’m happy for both of them.

"I think for their confidence for sure, it’s very good. I think they feel that we can trust them a lot.

"But at the end enjoy a little bit playing in the Champions League away. It’s going to be very good for them."

Liverpool plays Villarreal next in the Champions League. It already sits on six points from six in Europe having beaten another Spanish side in Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

Next up in the Premier League is a trip to Brentford, followed by a home clash with Brighton. Domestically, things have not been quite as smooth, with just two victories in six fixtures to date.

"The Champions League is a competition that everyone wants to play in," Iraola had said before the game.

"I could feel it in the first game against Atletico. It was a lovely atmosphere, a lovely win. We started the competition well and we want to continue in the same way."
