Lewis Koumas reacts to scoring first-ever Champions League goal for Liverpool

Liverpool made it two wins from two in the Champions League with a thrilling 6-3 victory over Austrian champions LASK, as Bradley Barcola scored a hat-trick.

Ronald Araujo opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a header from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner before Barcola netted his first Liverpool goal two minutes later following excellent work from Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas.

Barcola doubled his tally in the 37th minute, finishing a smart pass from Florian Wirtz, before Jeremie Frimpong headed home another Tsimikas cross six minutes into the second half.

Robert Ljubicic pulled one back for LASK in the 63rd minute, but Barcola completed his hat-trick three minutes later, tapping in Frimpong’s delivery.

Koumas added Liverpool’s sixth in the 72nd minute after another Frimpong assist, before Florian Flecker scored twice to reduce the deficit.

Reacting to his first-ever Champions League goal for Liverpool, Koumas said: “Yes Reds. A great win away. Important to bounce back from the last game and yeah, buzzing to get on the score sheet in the Champions League. See you soon.”

Koumas became only the second player aged 21 or younger to score and assist in a Champions League match for Liverpool during the victory over LASK.

The Wales international set up Barcola’s opening goal before scoring the Reds’ sixth in the 72nd minute. Steven Gerrard was the first Liverpool player to achieve the feat, doing so aged 21 in a Champions League match away to Dynamo Kyiv in October 2001.

Speaking to UEFA, Koumas added: “It’s huge [the opportunity to start]. To get the chance is one thing and then to take it is another. Really happy with tonight, it shows that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and work hard.

“I knew Jeremie [Frimpong] was going to cross it because he had a lot of space. I just focused on contact as the ball bounced and tried to hit the target.”

Liverpool bounced back from Sunday’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to leaders Manchester City with an entertaining European win. The Reds travel to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday.
