Chelsea ready to make 'hefty' offer to big-name star as they line up January move - journalist

Chelsea’s search for a new midfield leader is beginning to dominate the build-up to January, just weeks after Enzo Fernandez left Stamford Bridge for Man City.

The Blues banked £125 million from the late deal but failed to secure a successor before the summer deadline.

Xabi Alonso was therefore left one senior controller short, turning central midfield into an area for attention when the market reopens, and Alex Scott is currently at the centre of the speculation.

Bournemouth resisted Chelsea’s interest in the summer, despite receiving more than one bid worth over £60 million, but their position has reportedly softened.

The Cherries could now listen in January, as per Fabrizio Romano and other sources, although a valuation above £100 million is a clear warning to potential buyers.

Scott’s injury on England duty has added another issue to the picture, but Chelsea’s admiration is unlikely to disappear.

The 23-year-old would fit the club’s recruitment model, offers Premier League experience and still has room to develop. He would be an exciting answer to the Enzo problem, yet the likely cost makes it sensible for the Blues to study other routes.

That is where Frenkie de Jong has entered the conversation.

Pete O’Rourke reports for Football Insider that Chelsea have identified the Barcelona midfielder as a possible Enzo replacement and are willing to put a 'hefty' contract offer on the table.

Barcelona are said to want at least £50 million before considering a sale, while the player’s high salary means the full package would still be substantial.

At 29, De Jong would represent a change from Chelsea’s usual focus on younger players, but they've shown a willingness to deviate from that recently with their summer deals for Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.

The Dutchman’s calmness in possession is the obvious attraction.

He can receive the ball under pressure, move through midfield and help his side control the speed of a game.

Chelsea have plenty of energy in the middle, particularly when Moisés Caicedo is available, but Enzo’s departure removed an experienced passer who could connect defence and attack.

De Jong could fill that gap without needing years to grow into the role.

His experience for Ajax, Barcelona and the Netherlands would also bring know-how to a squad still packed with young talent.

Barcelona are not actively trying to move him on and Hansi Flick reportedly still sees him as an important player.

De Jong is also yet to feature this season because of injury, so Chelsea would need complete confidence in his condition before committing so much money.

The two leading names offer very different solutions.

Scott is the younger Premier League option whose best years should still be ahead of him, while De Jong is the established European performer who may cost less in transfer fees but demand far more in wages.

Chelsea ran out of time once in the summer, but with Scott and now De Jong doing the rounds, they appear determined not to make the same mistake in January.
