"I'm Beating Myself Up" - Antoine Sememyo Takes Responsibility for Wasteful Finishing Against Paris Saint-Germain

Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo held his hand up for a profligate showing in front of goal in Wednesday's defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Semenyo and Manchester City endured their first defeat of the 2026/27 season as the back-to-back UEFA Champions League winners put in a world-class first-half display that made it too little, too late for the hosts' late resurgence.

Luis Enrique's troops scored thrice in quick succession via Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha in the opening 32 minutes as Enzo Maresca's side were shell-shocked and had no answer for the Parisiens' attacking prowess.

City entered the heavyweight encounter with eight wins in eight across all competitions to start the Maresca era, having beaten Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday to extend their perfect start to the Premier League campaign to six games.

However, PSG are a different animal altogether and using his luxury of rotating heavily from their Ligue 1 commitments from last week, Enrique's men put Manchester City to the sword in the opening half to enter the break with a three goal lead.

City forward Semenyo has started the season firing on all cylinders but the Ghana international, who joined the Blues from Bournemouth for £65 million in January, did not have his shooting boots on.

Semenyo frustrated after individual profligacy in front of goal against PSG

Semenyo played out a brilliant 1v1 battle with PSG left-back Nuno Mendes from start to finish and despite getting in the right positions and scoring full marks for grit and effort, the 26-year-old was far from his ruthless best as he passed on chance after chance to help his side get back in the game.

"It's quite frustrating, to be honest," a candid Semenyo said in a post-match interview with CBS Sports. "I think I'm beating myself up a little bit at the moment from all the chances I missed but I think collectively, it was just the reaction and we done so well, caused so many problems, we're just unfortunate not to score so we just take the positives, so we'll just take the positives and go again."

Wednesday night's showdown with Paris Saint-Germain was Manchester City's first home game since the club were found guilty by an independent panel of breaching the Premier League's financial rules during 2009-18.

Manchester City have registered a formal, comprehensive appeal against the verdict as aq dark cloud of uncertainty looms over the Etihad Stadium at a nascent stage of the club's transition from Pep Guardiola to Maresca.

On the positive atmosphere created by the Etihad Stadium faithful against PSG, Semenyo added: "They [the fans] were fantastic, they were with us the whole way. [We] can't fault them, it was obviously a bit of a roller-coaster but they definitely enjoyed the game and we're so grateful for them."

PSG showed why they're back-to-back European champions, says Semenyo

PSG have suffered from a difficult start to the season, judging from their own high standards, but their dominance over Manchester City in the early stages was not missed by Semenyo.

"Yeah definitely, they're one of the best," Semenyo said in high praise for the European champions. "Yeah obviously, Ballon d'Or candidates all around in their team. yeah but they made it very hard for us today; we knew what to expect - very unorthodox, but credit to them, that's why they're back-to-back European champions."

Semenyo could be rested at the weekend as Manchester City return to Premier League action against Ipswich Town in search of a seventh consecutive win of the domestic league campaign.
