The [Boston Celtics](https://nesn.com/boston-celtics) could have one of the NBA's best power forwards back near full strength this season.
Jayson Tatum landed at No. 2 in [Sporting News' rankings](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/news/best-nba-power-forwards-2026-27-ranking-all-30-starters-lebron-james-jayson-tatum/ada7329015b6c78afdec7a7c) of all 30 starting power forwards for the 2026-27 NBA season, trailing only Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Miami Heat. Senior writer Stephen Noh placed Tatum ahead of several notable names, including Anthony Davis, Scottie Barnes and LeBron James.
Tatum is working his way back from an Achilles injury that limited him last season. However, Noh expects the Celtics star to be mostly recovered this year and return to his place among the league's top players.
Tatum's offensive versatility helped him earn the high ranking. He can create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates through his shooting, playmaking and ability to attack defensive mismatches. His defensive versatility also allows him to hold his own against players at multiple positions.
Noh pointed to Tatum's well-rounded game as a major reason he remains a perennial All-NBA selection.
Antetokounmpo took the top spot, with Noh highlighting the Heat star's ability to overwhelm defenses in transition and pressure the rim. His developing midrange game and passing have added to his offensive impact, while his defense remains a strength despite some signs of decline.
Davis ranked third, followed by Barnes at No. 4 and James at No. 5.
Tatum's placement puts him ahead of two other former NBA stars in Davis and James, while reinforcing expectations for what Boston could accomplish if its franchise player returns to form.
The Celtics will need Tatum to be a major contributor as they navigate the 2026-27 season. If he can regain his pre-injury level, his combination of scoring, playmaking and defense gives Boston a versatile centerpiece on both ends of the floor.
