Premier League: Supercomputer Predicts Champions

PL Trophy

PL Trophy

Following the 6th round of Premier League games the data from the results was fed into the supercomputer, BETSiE, and the verdict on the 2026-27 Premier League season is in and it may surprise many given all the drama lately in the media.

How are the predictions generated?

The model simulated the season 100,000 times. It draws on pre-season expectations, the difficulty of fixtures and underlying numbers like xG for and against, which measure the quality of chances a team creates and concedes. Every result from pre-season, last campaign and this one goes in too. New this year, Betarades has helped to add club finances and Transfermarkt player values, so squad quality and spending now shape the forecast.

Who wins the title?

In what would be a surprise given that Enzo Maresca has just taken over from club legend Pep Guardiola after 9 amazing years of management, City finish on 85.0 points in the average simulation, five clear of Arsenal on 80.1. Their title chance sits at 67.4 per cent, against 30.8 for Arsenal. That leaves just 1.8 per cent for the other eighteen clubs. City score 89.6 goals and concede 41.4, giving a goal difference of plus 48.1. Arsenal match them at the back, with 41.5 conceded, and trail only in attack.

Of course we still have no idea what will happen with Man City’s guilty verdict on 115 Premier League charges and what that could do to this season’s league table but many from the football world who have actually played and/or managed the game on the field as opposed to being a “suit” like Luis Enrique wish them well.

🚨🗣️ Luis Enrique on Man City: "There is a lot of noise surrounding BIG clubs like Manchester City." "We are waiting for the outcome." "I hope everything turns out well for them, because what they have achieved on the pitch is incredible, and they have EARNED everything they’ve won."

Who fights for the top four?

Chelsea take third with 65.6 points, a point clear of Liverpool on 64.4. Brighton sit fifth on 59.7. That looks like a big gap, yet the probabilities keep the race alive. Chelsea have a 63.4 per cent chance of a top-four finish, Liverpool 55.0 and Brighton 27.7.

Who goes down?

Fulham, Hull and Coventry. Coventry carry the highest relegation chance at 65.2 per cent, with Hull on 60.4 and Fulham on 43.6. Sunderland (30.4) and Ipswich (26.4) hover close behind, so one bad run could drag either of them into it. Coventry’s projected goal difference of minus 29.4 is the worst in the division.

Can Manchester United finish in the top four?

BETSiE says no, but it doesn’t say never. United land sixth on 57.7 points, two behind Brighton and 6.7 short of Liverpool in fourth. The model gives them a 20.5 per cent chance of the top four, roughly one in five. A top-six finish is almost a coin flip at 48.4 per cent.

My view? One in five feels fair. The numbers show a team that wins often enough, 16.1 games on average, but leaks too many goals. United concede 55.1, more than Liverpool (51.4) and Brighton (52.4), and that defensive gap is where the points disappear.

Draws matter too. The model has United drawing 9.5 games, more than Chelsea, Brighton or Liverpool manage. Turn just three of those into wins and they add six points, which lifts them to roughly 63.7. Suddenly Liverpool’s 64.4 is within reach.

So the route is clear, even if it isn’t easy. Tighten up in the final third of matches, stop dropping points from leads, and the top four becomes a real contest rather than a long shot. Brighton are the more immediate target. Catch them and United’s chances change quickly.
