Young attacking players who feature regularly under a new coach can still attract attention from rival clubs. Interest from Premier League sides often intensifies when a player’s role has not yet been fully established. Those clubs tend to present clear plans for minutes and development in an attempt to open a door.
Boards that move quickly to offer contract extensions and long-term guarantees can close that door. A close relationship with the club president adds further security. Once the extension is agreed, previous discussions with other clubs lose momentum.
Increased involvement in recent matches provides evidence that the player is viewed as part of the future rather than a candidate for departure. Assists in high-profile fixtures reinforce that message. Other clubs that had made contact are left to look elsewhere.
Arda Guler has agreed to extend his contract with Real Madrid by two years. The 21-year-old Turkey international will now remain at the club until at least 2031.
Arsenal and Manchester City were among the Premier League clubs that pursued Guler last summer. Both held talks with his representatives, outlined their plans for the player and attempted to persuade him to leave the Bernabeu. The clubs had viewed his position under new coach Jose Mourinho as potentially uncertain.
Instead, Real Madrid’s board provided guarantees that Guler is central to their long-term plans. The player is also close to president Florentino Perez, which has strengthened his standing. Mourinho has given him regular minutes since taking charge, and Guler contributed two assists in the 4-3 win over Roma on Wednesday.
TEAMtalk reports that Arsenal and City had already been told during the summer window that Madrid intended to extend the deal and that negotiations were close. Attractive offers were still placed on the table, yet the extension has now been completed. Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United had also contacted Guler’s representatives earlier in the year.
The agreement ends any immediate prospect of a move to either Arsenal or City. Guler’s increased role under Mourinho and the formal commitment from the board have removed the opening both clubs had hoped to exploit. Real Madrid’s decision to secure one of their brightest young players leaves the Premier League sides to pursue alternative targets.
The 21-year-old’s form and the two-year extension underline Madrid’s intention to build around him. Previous interest from England has been overtaken by events at the Bernabeu. Arsenal and City will now focus their attention on other options in the attacking market.
