Fresh Dominik Szoboszlai injury update emerges before Brentford tie

Liverpool faced further challenges ahead of their Champions League clash against LASK on Wednesday, with several key players unavailable for selection.

Dominik Szoboszlai missed the 6-3 victory after also sitting out the Premier League defeat to Manchester City over the weekend due to a hamstring injury.

The midfielder had trained ahead of the City match but felt tightness in his hamstring. Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola confirmed that Szoboszlai picked up his hamstring injury while on international duty with Hungary.

Iraola said, “Another one coming from the international games. He came with an overload; he felt a tight hamstring. He’s tried somehow, kind of pushing through training, but he was not feeling 100 per cent, and we will have to wait for Dom, yes.”

The Reds are continuing to monitor Szoboszlai, alongside Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brentford.

“It’s early for us to say, we have still tomorrow’s training,” said Iraola on Thursday afternoon. “Obviously, they were not ready for last night [against LASK].

“We have to wait and see. I think it’s still very early but the same way I said they are not available for the previous games, I leave the chance open this time, yes.”

Szoboszlai watched Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City from the stands before missing Liverpool’s Champions League clash against LASK, despite travelling with the squad to Austria.

According to the Daily Mail, the midfielder remains hopeful of returning within the next week after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury, despite concerns from Hungary that the problem could be serious.

He is expected to be assessed for a possible place in the squad for Saturday’s trip to Brentford. Trey Nyoni could compete for a midfield spot if Szoboszlai misses a third consecutive game, with Ryan Gravenberch suspended following his red card against Manchester City.
