Opinion: Why January is Arsenal’s best chance to offload Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres is struggling for regular game time at Arsenal, and while many supporters believe he is being kept out of the starting line-up because a better option is ahead of him, his limited involvement could also be affecting the team’s attacking output. The Swedish striker arrived with a strong reputation, but he has yet to consistently deliver the goals expected of him.

Gyokeres joined the Gunners after scoring almost 100 goals in two seasons at Sporting Club, establishing himself as one of the most prolific forwards in European football. Those performances raised expectations, with Arsenal hoping his finishing ability would make a significant difference to their attack.

Gyokeres needs to find his scoring touch

The striker has shown glimpses of his quality when given opportunities in an Arsenal shirt, but goals remain the most important measure of a centre forward’s contribution. So far, he has struggled to find the consistency needed to establish himself as a regular starter.

If his scoring rate does not improve, Gyokeres could face the prospect of finishing the campaign with five goals or fewer across all competitions. Such a return would fall short of expectations following his prolific spell in Portugal and could affect his market value.

Arsenal have been among the leading teams in England, and a reliable goalscorer could help them make better use of their attacking opportunities. However, Gyokeres has not yet provided the consistent output the club would have hoped for when they brought him to the Emirates.

Could a January exit benefit both sides?

With his opportunities limited, a departure could become a consideration if the situation does not improve. A move away might give Gyokeres the regular playing time he needs to rebuild his confidence and rediscover the form that made him such an attractive signing.

Arsenal would also need to weigh the financial implications of keeping a striker who is not delivering enough goals against the possibility of selling him while he retains significant market value. Allowing him to leave in January could be an option if a suitable offer arrives.

If Gyokeres remains at the Emirates until the end of the season and scores only five goals, Arsenal could struggle to command the fee they want. The club might then find it difficult to secure an offer approaching 25 million euros, particularly if his performances continue to disappoint.

For now, his future depends on whether he can turn his opportunities into goals and establish a more consistent role in Arteta’s plans.
