Clubs that have yet to solve their midfield control issues often revisit targets from previous windows. A manager who has publicly identified the need for reinforcement can push the hierarchy to explore January options, even when the club traditionally prefers summer business. Limited availability of preferred alternatives narrows the shortlist quickly.
Players who have struggled for consistent minutes since the later stages of last season become more prominent in those discussions. Competition from new arrivals and younger teammates reduces their involvement further. An unused substitute appearance followed by an injury in a post-match session adds another layer of uncertainty around their immediate role.
Interest that existed under a previous coach can remain relevant if the structural need has not been filled. Journalists in the player’s home country begin to frame him as a realistic option when other names are unavailable in the winter. Those reports focus on whether the selling club would entertain an enquiry and whether the player would be open to a move.
Real Madrid are already talking about signing Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Journalist Joaquin Maroto has described the 27-year-old as the only viable midfield option for the club at present.
“Zubimendi is the only midfield signing that fits Real Madrid right now because Adam Wharton can’t come,” Maroto said in quotes relayed by Defensa Central. “It’s Mourinho who’s going to request the signing of a midfielder; he’s already talking about it within the club.”
Zubimendi joined Arsenal last summer for around €70 million after years of pursuit. He was a regular early in his first season but has found minutes harder to come by, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and the summer arrival of Bruno Guimaraes ahead of him in the pecking order. He was an unused substitute against Leeds at the weekend and subsequently picked up an injury in a post-match training session.
Xabi Alonso had wanted to sign Zubimendi for Real Madrid last year before the player committed to Arsenal. The need for greater control in midfield has not disappeared, particularly after Rodri opted to join Barcelona. Jose Mourinho is said to be keen to strengthen the area as his side look to end their trophy drought.
Zubimendi has acknowledged that constantly being a substitute is “not ideal” for both club and country, though he is not the type to agitate for a transfer. Real Madrid rarely complete mid-season signings, yet the current situation may force a change in approach. Dani Garrido has urged the club to enquire about the player, stating: “Real Madrid should ask for a price for Zubimendi because he doesn’t play at all at Arsenal.”
Arsenal would be reluctant to lose a midfielder mid-season. Whether Real Madrid act on Mourinho’s reported request remains unclear, but the Spanish press is increasingly framing Zubimendi as a realistic January target. The combination of his reduced role and Madrid’s unmet need for midfield reinforcement has kept the link active.
