JJ Redick said Collin Sexton participated in everything except live work at Thursday's practice and is "trending in the right direction" to be available for the Lakers' regular-season opener against the Warriors on Oct. 21.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Collin Sexton is on track to return for the team's regular-season opener after missing all preseason games with a lower-leg injury.
Head coach JJ Redick said Sexton participated in everything except the live portion of Thursday's practice and is "trending in the right direction" to play against the Golden State Warriors on October 21, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin.
The Lakers officially open their season that night at Crypto.com Arena.
Sexton has been sidelined for roughly two weeks. Redick had previously described the 27-year-old as day-to-day, although his prolonged absence had created some concern about whether he would be ready for opening night.
Sexton nearing debut after lengthy absence
Sexton is expected to play an important role in the Lakers' second unit this season as the projected sixth man and primary option off the bench.
Los Angeles acquired him during the offseason after he averaged 15.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists across 68 games for the Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls last season.
His absence has limited the Lakers' ability to evaluate their full guard rotation during the preseason, with Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Sexton yet to share meaningful court time together.
The Lakers have one preseason game remaining, hosting the Denver Nuggets on October 16, before turning their attention to the Warriors five days later.
