In his AMA discussion on the Los Angeles Lakers' subreddit, Dan Woike of The Athletic offered a clearer perspective on the breakup between LeBron James and the Lakers this past summer.
Particularly, both sides have pursued their own pathways and priorities, which led to their eventual split.
"I think this is pretty simple - the Lakers had a plan to build a team around Luka Doncic in free agency with cap space and didn't seem particularly interested in using that space on him. And I don't think LeBron James was particularly interested in being a non-priority for the Lakers," the longtime Lakers beat writer said. "So, mutual divorce."
LeBron James leaves Lakers amid differing priorities
LeBron James entered unrestricted free agency last summer out of his expiring $52.6 million player option salary in 2025-26.
The Los Angeles Lakers have made it clear since the start that their primary goal was to retain James. However, the franchise faced questions about how they could pull it off due to their roster needs and urgent approach of building around Luka Doncic.
In the end, James informed the Lakers he would not return, culminating in his shocking decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers via a two-year, veteran's minimum deal.
The Lakers, on their own, moved forward and fully committed themselves to Doncic. They re-signed Austin Reaves to a max contract, found the center of their future in Walker Kessler, and brought new faces to help their contention with Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, Ziaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle, Kevon Looney, and Jaden Hardy.
James and the Lakers will meet for the first time as opponents in a highly anticipated Christmas Day matchup in LA for the upcoming season.
