October 16 – Barcelona and Spotify have pushed their now-familiar El Clásico shirt takeover into a much broader commercial play, handing Tyler, The Creator creative control of a campaign spanning football, fashion, music and gaming.
The American rapper and designer becomes the ninth act to take over the front of Barcelona’s shirt under the Spotify partnership, with the GOLF logo from his GOLF WANG label replacing Spotify’s branding for the men’s Clásico against Real Madrid on October 25.
Barça Femení will wear the shirt a day earlier against Granada.
This time, though, the shirt is only one piece of it.
Tyler has directed the campaign imagery and wider creative treatment, the first artist given that level of control since Spotify became Barcelona’s principal commercial partner in 2022. The collaboration also includes a full clothing collection developed with Nike, a live music and fashion event in Barcelona and an in-game version of the kit on Konami’s eFootball.
The retail element is considerably bigger than in previous takeovers. The range includes jackets, retro jerseys, tracksuits, T-shirts, sweatshirts, scarves and accessories, sold through GOLF WANG stores in London, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Sydney as well as Barça’s own retail network.
A run of 1,899 match-quality shirts – a nod to Barcelona’s founding year – has also been produced, alongside just 11 editions signed by Tyler. The latter are listed by the club at €2,999.99.
Spotify senior vice-president of marketing and partnerships Marc Hazan said: “Every jersey takeover we’ve done has pushed us somewhere new, but this one feels different. Tyler brings a distinct creative world to the collaboration, extending far beyond the jersey.”
The activation continues a series that began with Drake and has since included Rosalía, The Rolling Stones, Karol G, Coldplay, Travis Scott, Ed Sheeran and Olivia Rodrigo.
But the commercial activation has moved on from simply promoting an artist’s logo for one of football’s most watched fixtures. Barcelona and Spotify are now using the Clásico shirt as the launchpad for limited-edition retail, live events and digital products, with Nike and Konami folded into the same campaign.
