As per latest transfer news, Liverpool defender Jeremie Frimpong could leave Anfield in the January window. Barcelona are said to like the Dutch right-back and may make an offer soon.
Jeremie Frimpong struggles to settle at Liverpool
As reported by TEAMtalk, Frimpong is finding it tough to make his impact at Liverpool since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025. Liverpool paid £29.5million for him after he helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title in 2024. Instead, injuries have hurt his progress, and he has yet to find his best form.
Frimpong has played 40 games for Liverpool, scoring 2 goals and setting up 2 more. That works out at 1 goal or assist every 10 games, which is a modest return for a full-back. His game time has been limited this season under manager Andoni Iraola, with only two Premier League starts so far. In the Champions League, he has played just 31 minutes, which is less than half of a single match. Those numbers suggest the player is not getting regular football under Iraola at the moment.
Frimpong’s 2026/27 stats for Liverpool so far, as per FOTMOB:
Competition Matches Started Minutes played Defensive contributions Duels Won(%) Successful passes(%)
Premier League 3 2 179 12 46.2% 87.5%
UCL 1 0 30 – – –
EFL Cup 1 1 90 10 60% 83.3%
Why Barcelona want Frimpong and why Liverpool may sell
In a Monday post on X, Spanish journalist Juan Jesus said Barcelona have put Frimpong on their right-back shortlist. He wrote that the player is“very open to signing with Barca”after a tough spell in England. Jesus added that coach Hansi Flick asked for Frimpong in his first year in charge, along with Dani Olmo. He also said sporting director Deco is still keeping an eye on him and the Reds would sell for £35million.
The key detail in the claim is the role that Ronald Araujo plays at right-back. Barcelona sent Araujo on loan to Liverpool in the summer of 2026, and Iraola now uses him there. Liverpool also hold an option to buy him for £47million at the end of the season.
That could mean Iraola wants strength at the back more than the pace Frimpong brings to the right side. The Spanish side play a high line under Flick, so a quick full-back like Frimpong can cover the space behind. The reported £35million price would also give the Reds a gain of £5.5million on the £29.5million they paid.

Pedro Porro is also on Barcelona’s radar
Jeremie Frimpong is not the only right-back on the Barcelona list, as Tottenham defender Pedro Porro is also linked. Jesus said last Friday that Porro wants to return to Spain, either this winter or next summer. He also said Porro is on bad terms with manager Roberto De Zerbi, despite a recent new contract. Another Spanish journalist, Enric Canyellas, said on September 25 that Barcelona are working on a deal for Porro. He added that Alejandro Balde, who is short of game time, could leave and clear the way for Porro.
Barcelona now have Jules Kounde, Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo as their three right-back options. Flick appears to want one more option on that side, which explains the interest in two players. Neither deal is done, and the claims so far come from journalists, not from the clubs. Any deal for Frimpong would need Liverpool and Barcelona to agree a price, most likely in January.
